  • Lubbock church music director heads to National Cathedral

    Christopher Betts, music director and organist at First United Methodist Church, has accepted the position of organist and associate director of music at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

    The National Cathedral is the sixth-largest cathedral in the world and has choirs for boys and girls, a professional adult choir and a volunteer choir. Betts will assist with choir directing and in all areas of music at the cathedral.

    Betts became the First United Methodist Church's fifth artist-in-residence in 1993.

    He began his musical training as a boy chorister at Lichfield Cathedral in England. He eventually earned organ scholarships at Lichfield Cathedral, Magdalen College and Oxford University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Organists and was one of two organ scholars who performed on the soundtrack for "Shadowlands," the movie about C.S. Lewis, author of
