Zheng Tao: Armless swimmer who inspired French novel wins Tokyo gold
Chinese para swimmer Zheng Tao now has nine Paralympics medals to his name — six of them are gold medals. At the Tokyo Paralympic Games, he also broke his own meter backstroke S5 world record. The year-old, who picked up two Paralympic medals in the Rio de Janerio Games and three in the London Games, set a new Games record on Wednesday, September 1, by recording a time of seconds, finishing ahead of Yuan Weiyi and Wang Lichao, who picked up silver and bronze.
Tao lost his arms due to an electric shock when he was a child. But the “armless swimmer” continues to bedazzle fans of the sport. After winning the 50m freestyle final on Wednesday, September 1, Tao said: “I went all out with no regrets as this is my last race at Tokyo I think this was one of my best races ever.” His final medal was China's th summer Paralympic gold since the Games in New York City.
