  • Famed Indian artist Robert Freeman dies at 79

    Robert Freeman, who for decades kept a funky art gallery off Valley Center Road on the Rincon Reservation, was one of the most celebrated and influential Native American artists, died this week. He was 79.

    The Roadrunner learned of his death this week, but has been unable to learn when or if services will be held.

    Freeman’s sculptures adorned the State Capitol in Sacramento and the campus of Cal State University San Marcos.

    Freeman was an international fine arts artist for over 50 years. Master of a variety of styles and media, Freeman became one of the most accomplished Native American artists. Showing in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries and museum, Freeman won over 200 awards in art and was commissioned to do several public works, such as the Native American Seal State of California , which he completed in 2002.
